Kanye West - Your Asphalt (Presented by HipHopIsRead.com)

S/O to hiphopisread.com

Kanye West may be an arrogant, megalomaniacal asshole of unseen douchebaggery proportions but hey, he can make some great records. His singing sucks and his artsy vibe is only a notch above pedestrian by my estimate. And truthfully, I'm not even a big fan of his new album (I think it's the third-best in his catalog). But with all that said, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is my choice for Album of the Year. I know, I know, "but everybody's dick-riding the new Kanye album". This is true. It's also justifiable. The difference between a "Top __ Albums of 2010" list and an "Album of the Year" choice is that there is no second place for the latter selection. Kanye's album might be number three or four on your personal "Top __" list, behind The Roots, Roc Marciano, The Left or Big Boi (etc., etc.) - and that'd be a perfectly fair and reasonable argument. But "Album of the Year"? That title is bold. Album. Of the year. When you think about 2010 and the sole album that stood out in the past twelve months, only one of them really rises tall over the rest. Yes, it's the one with the pixelated fucking on the cover. In the words of 'Pac, "I don't wanna but I gotta do it." My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is my choice for rap album of the year. So here's to you, douchebags and assholes. Enjoy Your Asphalt... and turn it up!!

Nas - Hood Opulent (Presented by HipHopIsRead.com)

My second-to-last Best of 2010 compilation highlights my favorite living emcee, Nas. This year he released the long-awaited Distant Relatives alongside Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley, a great album which was unfortunately snubbed by Grammy voters. He also made waves by teasing the upcoming release of The Lost Tapes 2, soon before announcing the label politics that was preventing him to do so. Damn. Let your voice be heard by signing this petition. As far as musical output in 2010 goes, Nas' newly-released (or leaked) music was disparate. Accordingly, this mix is approximately split threefold, as follows: 1) new features and previously-unreleased tracks, 2)Distant Relatives songs with Damian Marley as well as reggae style collaborations with other artists, and 3) remixes and previously-unreleased tracks from or with a 90s sound. The cover art was inspired by Herbie Hancock's 1962 LP Takin' Off, released under Blue Note Records (slideshow here). Enjoy... and turn it up!!

Curren$y - Gettin' and Jettin' (Presented by HipHopIsRead.com)

Curren$y's been on the scene for nearly a decade if you can believe that. I slept on dude for a while, mainly because I was apprehensive to vouch for an artist with a dollar sign in his name. I stand corrected; Curren$y's claim to fame in 2010 is a worthy one. I was especially struck by the covalent bond forged between Spitta and legendary producer Ski Beatz on their Pilot Talk series. Oh, and I also #Fuxwit the Jets and Saints, so that's a plus. Gettin' and Jettin' takes its inspiration from Hank Mobley's 1961 album Another Workout, released under Blue Note Records in 1985 (slideshow here). Track three off the album is called - you guessed it - "Gettin' and Jettin'". That's appropriate, right? Stay tuned in 2011 for more Curren$y projects, including Muscle Car Chronicles and Pilot Talk III. 'til then enjoy Gettin' and Jettin' and... turn it up!!

*Throwback* Loose Ends - Slow Down

Suprised somebody hasnt sampled this yet. Ive heard of people sampling their other hit "Hangin On a String" (D.S.G.B - Sittin On Thangs & Wiz Khalifa - The Kid Frankie), but this song has so much potential. Anyways, this is still one of my favorite songs from the 80's...... (*Side note* Probably kinda late but i didnt know they were from London?!?!!)

Wiz Khalifa - Soy Khalifa (Presented by HipHopIsRead.com)

Wiz Khalifa - Soy Khalifa (Best of 2010)

The Source Magazine recently dubbed Wiz Khalifa their rookie of the year. Though he's yet to release his major label debut, he's appropriately earned a spot on my end of year considerations as well. His mixtape Kush & Orange Juice grew on me, and I must admit that "Black & Yellow" is quite infectious. My compilation features thirty tracks by the PA emcee dispersed throughout the blogosphere over the past year. Soy Khalifa takes its name from the intro track on Dexter Gordon's 1962 album A Swingin' Affair, from which the cover art is based upon as well (slideshow here). I've included a quick snippet as an intro just for kicks. You know what it iiiiiiiiiis. As always, enjoy... and turn it up!!

*Throwback* Who Shot Rudy!

'Who Shot Rudy' by Screwball

Interesting anecdote related to this song by now-defunct Queens rap outfit Screwball, about a fantasy assassination on then-mayor Rudy Giuliani; the consequences of the song embody the dynamic of the era in a fairly self-contained way. These were the days when getting caught smoking a joint on the street would get you a weekend in Central Booking.

*Release Reminder* Air Jordan VI Retro "LA Lakers"

Today, May 15th, 2010, Jordan Brand will release its fifth colorway of MJ’s sixth signature sneaker this year in the form of the Air Jordan 6 Retro”LA Lakers” for $150.

Much like the upcoming previously-released Air Jordan 6 Retro “Detroit Pistons”, this sneaker pays tribute to a team that Michael Jordan conquered in his career. If you recall, Michael Jordan won his first of six championships against the Los Angeles Lakers while wearing the Air Jordan VI. This particular Air Jordan 6 Retro features suede sections throughout the toe area and side panels, while the rest of the upper contains a 3M reflective material. The Los Angeles Lakers theme is evident by the purple and yellow contrast stitching throughout the base. To finish it off, this Air Jordan 6 Retro is complimented with a black/white midsole and an icy outsole. This may be a definite pickup for some of you Lakers fans out there; however, considering what this shoe actually represents, is this a shoe you Lakers fans actually covet?

*Biting Jordan IV* Supra EE Avenger

Supra EE Avenger

Erik Ellington’s new Supra signature model looks oddly familiar to one of the most prized shoe in sneakerhead lore. The Avenger draws inspiration from the Air Jordan IV “Bred,” but packages itself as a skate-ready low top.

Black nubucks is used for the construction, with the quarter panels and ankle areas receiving a perforation treatment. Three colors appear on the sole, with red surrounding the air bubble and supporting the underside, and black and grey coming together on the midsole. Grey also appears throughout. Honestly, you might as well be skateboarding in your Air Jordan IV's.

I dedicate this to all the mother's out there..... Happy Mothers Day!!!

Air Jordan 9 (IX) – White / Citrus – Deep Forest Green

I Must Own These Shoes!!!

The Air Jordan 9 (IX) is slated to make a comeback this year, and will release in never before seen colorways, just like the one here. Shown here are detailed pictures of a pair which host a predominantly white leather upper, along with white patent leather at the base, as well as the ankle area. What gives these shoes depth are the dark green and citrus yellow details, which are visible in the forms of contrast stitching, shoe laces, and logos. It is rumored that only 2,000 pairs will release, but Marquee Sole has several sizes available now.
